How Can Dental Bridges Restore Your Smile?

A bridge is a custom, fixed prosthesis that replaces one or more missing teeth. It enhances your smile, speech, and chewing function. A bridge can be supported by natural teeth or implants.

While missing teeth can be embarrassing, having gaps can also lead to other issues such as poor jaw alignment or speech difficulties.

A dental bridge provides numerous benefits:

  • Reinstates your ability to chew and speak properly
  • Provides you with a full set of teeth – no more hiding your smile!
  • Properly distributes biting forces
  • Retains the position of other teeth
  • Keeps your jaw function in order

Contact West Allis Dental Care to learn more about how dental bridges can restore your healthy smile. Call (414) 206-3166 today to book a free consultation about your bridge treatment.

Bridges crafted at West Allis Dental Care are customized to accommodate each patient’s individual needs. Before creating the permanent bridge we meticulously examine the missing tooth and surrounding area and take an impression for the lab. The lab will create a bridge consisting of several customized crowns that can be made in three ways:

  • Traditional bridges — the most common bridge type, traditional bridges are created using a crown for the tooth or implant on either side of the missing tooth with a pontic (artificial tooth) in between. Traditional bridges are made from superior materials such as semi-precious or precious metals, porcelain, or a combination of metal fused to porcelain.
  • Cantilever bridges — commonly used when adjacent teeth are present on only one side of the missing tooth or teeth.
  • Maryland bonded bridges — created from plastic and supported by a metal framework. This type of bridge is also referred to as a resin-bonded bridge or a Maryland bridge.

While your bridge is being skillfully custom made you will be provided a temporary replacement. The entire process takes approximately two weeks, which culminates with the permanent bridge being cemented into place.

West Allis Dental Care performs quality dental treatments at affordable prices. In addition, we also offer a Dental Protection Plan – a supplementary program to help cover dental bridgework expenses that your insurance may not pick up.

We’ve been at the West Allis location since 1979 – let us bring back your smile!

When is a Dental Crown Necessary?

A dental crown or “cap” may be necessary to:

  • Prevent a severely decayed tooth from breaking
  • Restore a tooth with broken tooth structure
  • Support a dental bridge
  • Cover discolored or deformed teeth
  • Restore a dental implant

Consult the professionals at West Allis Dental Care if you suspect a tooth is compromised due to decay or injury.

A crown can save your smile – contact West Allis Dental Care.

What Types of Crowns Are Commonly Used?

There are many types of crowns available:

  • Metal — ideal for back molars, metal crowns rarely chip, break, or wear down. Less tooth structure needs to be removed compared to other crown materials. Typically the metals used are gold alloy or a base-metal alloy such as nickel or chromium.
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal — Porcelain fused-to-metal crowns can be used for either front or back teeth. They closely resemble natural teeth and are the most common crowns.
  • All ceramic or all-porcelain — These crowns have very good esthetics. Ceramic and porcelain crowns are a good choice for front teeth.

Fillings

A filling is used to repair a tooth that is affected by decay, cracks or fractures. The decayed or affected portion of the tooth will be removed and then replaced with a filling.

There are different types of filling materials available, each with its advantages and disadvantages. Your dentist can discuss with you the best options for restoring your teeth. Composite (white) fillings, and silver amalgam fillings, are the most widely used today.

Silver Amalgam Fillings

Amalgam fillings are more commonly used on the back teeth or in large cavities as amalgam is a very durable and strong filling material. The back teeth are exposed to more force in chewing and eating than the front teeth and are therefore more suited for silver filings. They are also quicker to apply and easier to use in areas that are difficult to keep dry during tooth repair.

Many people are aware that there is mercury in the silver amalgam filling material. Rest assured that this mercury is not the same type of mercury that is ingested by fish causing mercury poisoning. The mercury found in amalgam fillings is mixed with other metals and forms a safe stable material. The American Dental Association, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U. S. Food and Drug Administration, and World Health Organization all agree that based on extensive scientific evidence, dental amalgam is a safe and effective cavity-filling material.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

Tooth-colored fillings, also called composite resins, are most commonly used for smaller cavities and the front teeth. Due to their cosmetic appeal, they are very popular. It takes a little longer to place a tooth- colored filling as it is very important to keep the area completely dry so the resins can bond correctly with the tooth for a good leak-free seal. These fillings are also a bit more expensive. Let West Allis Dental Care help you determine how much your insurance will cover for this and other types of fillings.

As with most dental restorations, fillings are not permanent and may someday have to be replaced. Regular examinations are very important to monitor your fillings.

Let West Allis Dental Care help you do this with regularly scheduled checkups. Call us today if it has been more than 6 months ago that you visited a dentist.

Thorough Teeth Cleaning and Oral Health

Good oral hygiene is very important. It is the key to a healthy, confident, beautiful smile and it is important for overall general health.

Professional dental teeth cleanings (dental prophylaxis) are done by our dental hygienists. Your teeth cleaning appointment includes:

  • Any necessary X-rays.
  • Removal of plaque and calculus (tartar) — Plaque is a sticky film that forms on teeth. It is comprised of a growing colony of bacteria, which — if left unattended — can cause inflammation, periodontal disease, and tooth decay. Calculus is hardened plaque that can only be removed with special dental instruments.
  • Teeth polishing — Removes stains and plaque that is not removed during regular brushing.
  • Oral hygiene instructions — Tips on proper brushing and flossing techniques.
  • Oral examination — After your teeth cleaning, a dentist will consult your radiographs (X-rays) and complete a thorough examination of your teeth and gums. Any needed treatment for good oral health can then be discussed and planned.

West Allis Dental Care has been serving the West Allis area since 1979. Together, the dentists have a wealth of combined experience and share a philosophy of offering affordable dental care and using the best practices.

This helps us deliver the best dental care to you and your family. Whether you live or work in West Allis or the general Milwaukee area, please contact us today at (414) 206-3166 to get started toward better oral health, teeth that feel great, and a super smile!

Dental X-Rays

Dental X-rays are an essential preventative and diagnostic tool. They provide valuable information not visible during a regular dental exam. Dentists and dental hygienists use this information to safely and accurately detect hidden dental abnormalities and complete an accurate treatment plan. Without X-rays, problem areas may go undetected. Detecting and treating dental problems at an early stage can save time, money, unnecessary discomfort, and your teeth!

Dental X-rays may reveal:

  • Decay between the teeth.
  • Problems inside a tooth or below the gum line.
  • Bone loss or periodontal disease.
  • Cancerous and non-cancerous tumors, abscesses, or cysts.
  • Developmental abnormalities.
  • Wisdom teeth.

Staying current with the latest technologies is just one of the ways that West Allis Dental Care brings you some of the best dental care in West Allis and Milwaukee. West Allis Dental Care uses digital X-rays (radiographs) to provide you with the newest and most effective diagnostic technology available. Digital radiographs several advantages:

  • Digital X-rays may be viewed seconds after being taken.
  • Digital X-rays are much clearer and provide color contrast, which makes them easier to read than a film-processed image.
  • X-ray images may be manipulated by rotating, magnifying, or sectioning the image.
  • Digital X-ray equipment exposes the patient to as much as 80% less radiation than older X-ray technologies.
  • The use of digital X-rays contributes to our efforts toward a paperless office, which is environmentally responsible.

How often should dental X-rays be taken?

The need for dental X-rays depends on each patient’s individual dental health needs. Your dentist and dental hygienist will recommend necessary X-rays (radiographs) based on the review of your medical and dental history, dental exam, signs and symptoms, age considerations, and risk for disease.

A full mouth series of dental X-rays is recommended for new patients and retaken every few years thereafter. Bite-wing X-rays (X-rays of top and bottom teeth biting together) are taken at check-up visits and are recommended once or twice a year to detect new dental problems.
