A tooth-colored filling involves bonding composite resin material to a tooth. This is done to repair the damage done to the tooth by decay, improve the alignment of the teeth, or improve the shape of the teeth.

First, the surface of the tooth is roughened to improve bond strength. A gel is applied to etch the tooth surface, and a primer/bond agent is applied to adhere the restorative material to the surface. Next, the composite filling is placed on the tooth and hardened with intense light. Finally, the composite resin material is shaped and polished to get a lustrous finish.

A veneer is a thin porcelain shell placed over the surface of the front teeth. Veneers are usually done to the part of the teeth that is visible when talking or smiling. They commonly involve two appointments. At the first appointment the teeth are prepared, impressions are taken, and the teeth are given a temporary covering. In two weeks when the custom veneers are ready, the temporaries are removed and the veneers are bonded to the teeth. These laboratory-fabricated veneers are usually made using porcelain or pressed ceramic and are very esthetically pleasing.

The advantage of veneers versus crowns is that much less tooth material is removed, and the procedure is generally less uncomfortable. Veneers are recommended for teeth that have large fillings or little tooth structure.

In this case, other options may be discussed, such as veneers.

Our office uses products called NiteWhite and DayWhite. This procedure involves wearing a custom-fitted clear tray filled with the NiteWhite or DayWhite solution. The whitening process may take days or weeks depending on the changes desired.

Your teeth may require periodic touch-ups to stay whiter and brighter, therefore it is important to keep the custom-fitted tray. Refills of the product are available at our office if needed.
